Farmers Meet AI

EnsetAI, developed by Alabaster International and Deep Impact AI, is co-designed by Enset farmers in Dorze, Ethiopia, and leading Enset researchers at Arba Minch University, Ethiopia. Farmers give continuous feedback as the app is developed, ensuring each feature supports their goals, well-being, and empowerment. The team of experts at Deep Impact AI and their partners at Planette build groundbreaking foundational AI models, providing accessible and equitable access to AI technology to rural farmers, especially female smallholders.

Our areas of focus are:

Healthcare:

  • Preventative Health Services: Vitamin A, de-worming, malnutrition assessment and treatment, immunizations, female hygiene, prenatal, antenatal and post-partum care

Woman-Focused Wellness:

  • Nutrition and Food Security: Empowering female smallholder farmers, particularly in the cultivation of Enset and other drought-tolerant crops
  • Female Entrepreneurship: Supporting women-led businesses and initiatives, fostering economic independence and community-wide prosperity

The Vision

Leverage AI technology & promote digital equity

  • AI-powered app for Enset farming practices
  • Risk mitigation and tailored cultivation insights
  • Scalable, user-friendly tool for farmers

Phase 1: 20,000 households

  • In the next 3 years, we plan to deploy EnsetAI to 20,000 users to scale Enset Agroforestry home gardens, intercropping Enset with coffee and fruit trees.

Phase 2: 3 million households

  • Within 4-6 years, we aim to scale EnsetAI to 3 million users, impacting 15 million people in Ethiopia through new Enset agroforestry systems
  • Simultaneously, phase 1 will begin in Kenya for 20,000 new users.

Our Business Model

Long-term sustainability for EnsetAI will be achieved in the following ways:

Partnership

Alabaster and Deep Impact are seeking investment and grant partners, particularly to support the initial costs to deploy EnsetAI to 20,000 users (phase 1)

User Fees
Alabaster and Deep Impact will eventually charge a nominal user fee to support the use of EnsetAI and maintain the infrastructure for continued AI modeling and platform customization
Carbon Financing
Alabaster, in collaboration with Nature for Justice is developing a robust carbon financing portfolio for long-term investment in Enset cultivation, which will support the scale of EnsetAI
SMEs
EnsetAI will support the Enset value chain and strengthen other value chains like coffee, enabling the establishment of SMEs, providing an additional source of income to sustain EnsetAI users, i.e. to pay the user fee
